- A leap ahead of its predecessor?
Every time a fresh Ford Mustang emerges, advancement is a given. More strength, more capabilities, and inevitably, more of everything. While some Mustang fans will be thrilled, others might feel left out.
Having had the privilege to drive the S650-generation 2024 Ford Mustang GT in a rather exquisite trim, it feels like standing at a crossroads. While its roaring, fuel-thirsty engine screams of classic muscle, certain modern touches might feel too futuristic. Don’t fret—it’s nowhere close to a Mach-E. Yet, this Mustang isn’t quite the stallion of yesteryears.
Our Ride: 2024 Ford Mustang GT Details
Describing our test vehicle as impressive would be an understatement. This GT Premium Fastback boasted the enhanced, high-revving Coyote 5.0-liter V-8 powerhouse, delivering 486 hp and 418 lb-ft while maintaining a fuel efficiency of 14/23 mpg city/highway. And the transmission? A robust Getrag MT-82 six-speed manual ensures those wheels get all the power.
But there’s more to this Mustang. Our vehicle came with the Performance package, which included enhanced structural support, specialized chassis adjustments, summer-ready Pirelli P-Zero tires, a 3.73 rear axle, the renowned Brembo brake setup, and the much-talked-about electric drift brake. Paired with the MagneRide adjustable dampers and a quad-tip performance exhaust, it’s a dream come true for any car enthusiast.
Label our ride the “Stealth Stallion.” With its 19-inch wheels, rear spoiler, roof, mirrors, headlights, and emblems all in a sleek black, courtesy of the Nite Pony package, it perfectly complements the mysterious Vapor Blue shade. Add the High equipment package with its advanced driver aids, illuminated entryways, and powerful B&O sound system; the price tag is $61,775.
Track Day with the Performance Pack
On paper, this 2024 Ford Mustang GT seemed destined for greatness. And it did not disappoint. Achieving 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds, it continued its sprint, completing the quarter-mile in 12.5 seconds at a speed of 114.7 mph. These figures stand toe-to-toe with their predecessors.
When it came to halting this beast, the Brembos were on point. Bringing the Mustang to a standstill from 60 mph in a mere 99 feet showcased consistency and reliability. Such braking prowess isn’t new to the Mustang lineage, but it’s always a pleasure to witness.
Weighing in at 3,933 pounds, this 2024 model is the most substantial naturally aspirated Mustang coupe we’ve ever had our hands on. While impressive, this might play a role in its performance metrics, which sometimes outshine its ancestors. However, our test drivers had nothing but praise for its stable, predictable behavior. Remember, the Mustang GT isn’t just for the racetrack. Though there’s always room for enhancement, it’s designed for daily drives and exhilarating weekend adventures.
Tech-Driven Experience
In the 2024 Ford Mustang GT, the six-speed shifter and accompanying clutch remain the only true analog components. The rest? Digitally driven, with varying success rates. Two areas, in particular, drew our attention.
The 2024 Mustang’s steering wheel underwent a significant revamp, adopting a flat-bottom design with an even chunkier grip than its predecessors. While it’s a joy to hold and offers agility, the feedback leaves much to be desired.
Then there’s the dominating touchscreen. Almost every function relies on this interface, from navigation inputs to climate control adjustments. While the 13.4-inch screen is visually appealing and responsive, the over-reliance on touch inputs detracts from the overall user experience of the 2024 Ford Mustang GT.
The Essence of GT
There’s a lot to admire about the 2024 Ford Mustang GT. The moment you ignite the Coyote engine, it’s an auditory delight. Paired with the optional exhaust system, you decide how loud or subtle you want it to be.
The updated engine offers ample low-end torque, making high revs unnecessary for a smooth start. The throttle’s responsiveness, reminiscent of electric vehicles, ensures the Mustang GT surges forward with minimal effort.
The six-speed demands authority, with its robust feel and short, precise shifts. The clutch offers a balance between aggressive, quick changes and smoother transitions. And while the electronic handbrake might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it serves its purpose well.
One of the more commendable features is the electronic brake pedal. It offers a soft initial touch for everyday driving and then firms up, providing a confident deceleration experience. The MagneRide suspension dampers balance comfort and stability, making the 2024 Ford Mustang GT versatile for various driving conditions.
A Gem with Flaws
In an era where cars like these are becoming rare, it’s essential to appreciate the Mustang GT for what it is. While it might have quirks, it remains thrilling, staying true to the Mustang legacy. If this turns out to be the last V-8 manual Mustang, it’s a chapter worth cherishing. And with 2024 just being the beginning, there’s more excitement on the horizon.
