The Maruti Suzuki Swift VDi (ABS) was tested, covering a commendable 1,00,000 km. Despite its impressive mileage of 14.27 km, there were some hitches. One significant issue was the recurring replacement of the synchronizer ring, a defect that surfaced thrice.
The Swift’s Inception
Back in 2007, the need for a reliable support vehicle was paramount. This vehicle’s primary role was to transport equipment for shoot sessions. Fuel efficiency and low maintenance costs were crucial given the anticipated frequent travel. The diesel variant of the Swift, launched by Maruti, was the perfect fit.

The Wait and Safety Concerns
The anticipation was palpable after booking the top-tier Swift VDi ABS. However, a month into the waiting period, the dealer suggested opting for a non-ABS version, citing its adequacy for Indian roads. This highlighted a glaring ignorance about essential safety features. It’s worth noting that even this premium variant lacked a rear wiper and defogger, essentials during monsoons.
Tire Upgrades and Additions
Post-delivery, the immediate task was to replace the inadequate 165 spec JK tires. Given the Swift’s power, the stock tires were accident-prone. The upgrade mirrored the international Swift’s 195/60/15 specification. Other additions included synthetic engine oil, a pioneer head unit with JBL speakers, and a heat-rejection film.
Gearbox Troubles
A significant issue arose within the first 10,000 km. The 2nd and 3rd gears malfunctioned due to a defective synchronizer ring. The repair process was tedious, involving the entire engine unit’s demounting. This problem recurred twice, at 30,000 and 50,000 km, and was attributed to the same faulty part. Despite the setbacks, Maruti’s dealership experience and extended warranty were commendable.
Minor Adjustments and Observations
Rattling, a common issue in the 2005 Swift models, persisted, especially in the boot area. A simple foam padding solution rectified this. Driving the premium variant, the absence of rear wipers, defoggers, and airbags was felt, especially during challenging weather conditions. At 75,009 km, the Michelin Energy XM tires were replaced, prioritizing safety.
Engine and Performance
As the kilometers accumulated, the engine’s sound became more pronounced. At 90,000 km, an unusual noise emerged, which remained undiagnosed. The ride quality remained consistent, though the suspension required an overhaul at 60K km. Remarkably, the clutch endured throughout, surpassing typical expectations.
Comfort and Space
The rear seat was less than ideal for prolonged journeys, with limited legroom and a claustrophobic feel. The boot space was also found wanting on numerous occasions.
Service and Maintenance Insights
Contrary to popular belief, maintaining the Swift was more economical than perceived. Routine servicing averaged between 6-7 thousand rupees. However, the diesel variant’s fuel savings justified the slightly higher maintenance costs. The 1.3 Multijet engine was a standout, balancing performance and efficiency. The best and worst mileage recorded were 21.3 kmpl and 11.2 kmpl, respectively.
Dealership Experience
Maruti’s service was noteworthy. The dealership ensured prompt delivery post-servicing, with professionalism evident in every aspect.
Conclusion and Future Prospects
As the Swift aged gracefully, the decision to retire was made. Its replacement has already been chosen, leaving room for speculation.
